Barons finish 2006 PDL season with loss to Flames

OC drops two of last three at home and fall short of playoffs

The Ocean City Barons lost to the Westchester Flames in their season finale at Carey Stadium 3-2. They gave a spirited effort, but lost to a Flames team who were missing many of their key players as they looked ahead to next weekend's Eastern Conference playoffs in Virginia Beach.

The Barons lead 1-0 at the halftime break thanks to a goal from Jeremy Ortiz in the 4th minute, but Westchester reponded with three unanswered goals in the second half to give them a comfortable 3-1 lead. The Barons didn't give up, pushing to equalize in front of a good crowd at the Beach House. Rich Baker pulled one back in the 81st minute with a low driving shot into the far corner of the goal. With that momentum from that score, they created several chances in the final minutes, but were not able to level the score.

The Barons finish the 2006 season with a 6-4-6 record (24 points), finishing in second place in the Northeast Division, four points behind the division-winning Flames. Mt. Laurel, NJ native and LaSalle University product, Jeremy Ortiz finishes as the club's leading goal scorer with nine, and Ryan Heins of Medford, NJ will return to Temple for his senior year having led the Barons in assists with six.
