For the second game in a row, the Ocean City Barons (5-4-5, 20 pts.) scored early in the first half, and for the second game in a row, they let that early lead slip away and lost the game. With a 4-1 loss to the Brooklyn Knights (8-2-4, 28 pts.) on a rainy night in New York, the Barons were eliminated from playoff contention with two games left to play in the 2008 season.

The win by Brooklyn was their first against the Barons since June 11, 2003, a span of seven games without a victory. The win also moves them into first place in the Northeast Division with two games to play.

Ocean City entered the game needing to win their final three games to have a chance to make the playoffs for the fourth time in five years, and a win over Brooklyn seemed to be a possibility after Leon Brown found Byron Carmichael for a goal 45 seconds into the game. Brown sent Carmichael through and he beat Knights’ goalkeeper Chris Antonio for his team-best sixth goal of the season, and his 99th point of his career.

The Barons would continue to threaten throughout the first half, but would have to battle without one of their top goalscorers when Lee Squires went down with an injury in the 22nd minute. Steve Miller would come off the bench to replace the All-American.

After the nice start by Ocean City, Brooklyn’s Juan Guerra turned the game on it’s head with a goal on either side of halftime. With the Knights up 2-1, the Barons pushed for the equalizer.

With Ocean City throwing everything forward, Brooklyn’s Julio DoSantos caught them with a goal in the 77th minute. The former Vasco De Gama would later add another in second half stoppage time to hand the Barons their second loss in a row.

Barons goalkeeper Tunde Ogunbiyi returned to the club for this match and made seven saves in his first-ever loss. He is currently on a break in between training camps as the Nigerian Olympic team prepares to head to China next month.

Chris Antonio made five saves for the Knights to improve to 6-2-2.

The Knights are now in the midst of a four-game unbeaten streak as they battle for a playoff spot.

The Barons will close out the 2008 season with two home games, this Saturday against the Long Island Rough Riders, and the following Sunday, July 20 against the New Jersey Rangers. Both games are scheduled to kick-off at 7:30 p.m.
