Needing a win to build some momentum ahead of their upcoming U.S. Open Cup match, the Ocean City Barons (6-3-1) earned a 2-1 victory over the Rhode Island Stingrays (3-6-2) at the Tennessee Avenue Soccer Complex on Saturday night. Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) and Ryan Richter (LaSalle / Southampton, PA) each scored for Ocean City, while Barons goalkeeper Jordan Bar (Fairfield / Centerville, MA) made five saves to earn his first PDL win in between the sticks.

The win snaps a brief two-game losing streak and they finish the night tied for third place in the Northeast Division (
PDL Standings). The top three teams qualify for the post-season and the club they are tied with, Newark Ironbound Express, have played four more games than the Barons.

The win extends the Barons’ unbeaten streak against the Stingrays to six games (5-0-1). The last time Ocean City lost to Rhode Island was June 21, 2003.

"It was a great performance, a great attacking display," said Barons head coach Neil Holloway, who had to watch the game from the stands after receiving a red card at the end of last Tuesday’s loss at Long Island. "With a little more luck we would have had a hatful of goals, but we didn’t capitalize on all the opportunities. But we were rewarded with three points and that’s important."

It didn’t take long for the Barons offense to get rolling in their second home game at Tennessee Avenue. Within five minutes of the opening kick, the home side nearly struck twice. First, J.T. Noone (Temple / Harrisburg, PA) cut in from the left wing and struck a low shot to the far post, but the ball bounced off the woodwork and was cleared away by the Stingray defense.

Minutes later, Barons defender Jimmy Davis rose to meet a corner kick with his head from point blank range, but Rhode Island goalkeeper Jonathan Nydell made the save to keep the Barons off the scoreboard.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Nydell could only keep the game scoreless for a few more minutes as Carmichael would score his 44th career goal in the 7th minute. William Swetra (James Madison / Egg Harbor, NJ) fought to win the ball in midfield and after emerging from traffic, he found Carmichael streaking toward goal. The Barons’ all-time goalscoring leader struck it first time to the right of a diving Nydell to make it 1-0. The assist by Swetra was his team-leading fourth of the season.

The attack continued five minutes later when Noone saved a ball from going out of bounds on the touch line, played in a cross and after a deflection, the ball fell to Leon Brown just outside the box who’s shot also deflected off the post and was cleared.

Ocean City continued to pile on the pressure in the first half, but as time went on, Rhode Island came into the game, looking for an equalizer.

At halftime, Holloway made three changes to his lineup, trying to find a second goal and also resting key players for what expects to be a brutal upcoming week for the club. They travel to Maryland for the Open Cup game on Tuesday, then back home for back-to-back games on Thursday and Saturday.

Two of the subs made an immediate impact by putting OC up 2-0. Ryan Richter and Billy Pinto (Hofstra / Audubon, NJ) used a combination play between them to free up Richter on the right side. The LaSalle Explorer then fired a shot into the upper 90, past the keeper for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Barons continued to create chances, but there were a couple of them where Lady Luck was definitely not on their side. With another display of midfield ball movement, Junior Chapman (LaSalle / Winslow, NJ) found himself free with only the keeper to beat. He managed to dribble around the keeper, but when it came to the empty net goal, he missed the target.

Chapman nearly scored again when Richter started a 3-on-1 break down the right wing. The goalkeeper came out to challenge Richter, so he passed to the middle to Chapman who, rather than dribbling the ball into the net, struck the ball with power, which helped push it wide.

The Stingrays made it interesting in the 75th minute when Fabio Lima de Barros dribbled up the right side of the field, sent in a cross that found Ben Berube who put the ball past Jordan Bar to cut the lead in half.

The game was nearly leveled with just a few minutes left, but Andrew Sousa’s free kick just outside the 18-yard box hit the crossbar. The fans breathed a sign of relief as the final whistle sounded.

The Barons will begin an extremely busy week by traveling down to Boyds, MD on Monday to prepare for their Open Cup game against D.C. United. After that, the club plays the Newark Ironbound Express on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Tennessee Avenue and the team makes a return to Carey Stadium on Saturday July 4 to take on the second place Ottawa Fury. Tickets for both games are available at the front gate: $6 adults / $4 kids.
