Carmichael saves Barons, makes history
With a late equalizer, he keeps the club unbeaten and becomes Ocean City's all-time leading goalscorer
Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) capped off a successful two-game road trip by scoring a dramatic equalizer to save a point against the Rhode Island Stingrays (0-4-2, 2 pts.) on Sunday night. In the second game in as many nights, the Barons earned a 1-1 draw in East Providence, thanks to an 89th minute goal by Carmichael. 
With that game-tying goal, he becomes the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with his 37th career tally.
Ocean City finishes their back-to-back road trip with four points after defeating the Cape Cod Crusaders the night before 2-1. They remain unbeaten (3-0-3, 12 pts.) after six games played and find themselves in second place in the Northeast Division, one point behind next weekend’s opponent, the Brooklyn Knights. Ocean City finishes their back-to-back road trip with four points after defeating the Cape Cod Crusaders the night before 2-1. They remain unbeaten (3-0-3, 12 pts.) after six games played and find themselves in second place in the Northeast Division, one point behind next weekend’s opponent, the Brooklyn Knights.
It may have been a hangover from last night’s victory, but the Barons started slow, and the ’Rays took advantage. In the 4th minute, Rhode Island’s Ryan Kelley found Tim Ritter on the left wing, who fired a one-timer into the back of the net for the opening goal of the match.
The Rhode Island lead woke the visitors up, and they dominated the remainder of the first half, but were unable to come away with anything to show for it.
Ocean City continued the one-sided play in the second half, on their way to outshooting the Stingrays 18-7 in the game. Rhode Island held the lead for 85 minutes thanks to goalkeeper Josh Ford, who plays his college ball at the University of Connecticut. Ford made 17 saves and kept the Barons off the scoreboard until the final minute.
In that final minute, Connor Gorman (West Virginia / Phila, PA) threw the ball in from the left wing and found Jeremy Ortiz (LaSalle / Mt. Laurel, NJ) in the box, who touched it over to Carmichael, who fired home his second goal in as many nights. The 89th minute strike denied the Stingrays their first victory of the 2008 season.

Tunde Ogunbiyi (New Hampshire / Gwynedd, PA) made his second straight start, making six saves and improving his record to 1-0-1.
Ocean City leads the all-time PDL series 4-2-0, and have won the last four meetings, with the last victory coming on July 16, 2005.
The Barons return home on Saturday night for a home game with the first place and defending Eastern Conference champion Brooklyn Knigths. Kick-off is schduled for 7:30 p.m. at Carey Stadium.
