The Ocean City Barons (5-2-5, 20 pts.) snapped a three-game winless streak and avenged last week’s loss to the Westchester Flames (5-3-2, 17 pts.) by defeating them 2-1 at Carey Stadium on Sunday night. BJ Glenn (Lafayette / Phila, PA) was the hero for Ocean City, scoring the game-winner in the 84th minute on his first touch after entering moments ago as a substitute.

Following Sunday’s results in the Eastern Conference, the Barons move into sole possession of third place in the division, three points behind the first place Newark Ironbound Express. They also find themselves one point behind the Fredericksburg Gunners in the Eastern Conference wild card standings with four games to play. Dylan Lawrence (Lees-McRae / Winterville, NC) made five saves to earn his first win of the season. He improves to 1-1-1 since joining the team a few weeks ago.

For the fourth straight game, it was the opponent who struck first. Michael Konicoff, who scored and assisted on the game-winner in the first meeting on June 21, made it 1-0 just before halftime. He caught Lawrence off his line, and chipped a high arching shot over the outstretched arms of the Lees-McRae College goalkeeper.

On the other side of the break, the Barons would tie it up when Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) won a battle for the ball with a Flames defender. After winning it back, he was taken down from behind in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the home side. Adam Sternberger (Rutgers / Mays Landing, NJ) would step up to the spot and fire it low and to the left for his first goal of the season.

With the scoreboard reading 1-1, the game changed in the 79th minute when Westchester midfielder Christian Camacho was sent off after receiving his second yellow card after a hard tackle. A few minutes later, with a man advantage, Glenn entered the game to give the attack some fresh legs and the move paid off immediately.

In the 84th minute, Carmichael fired a shot on goal which was saved by Flames goalkeeper James Hilaire, but he was unable to control the rebound and Glenn was there to clean up the mess, putting home the game-winning goal with his first touch of the game. Glenn scored his first career PDL goal in only his second appearance of the season, after making his debut as a substitute on June 13 at the New Jersey Rangers.

Eight of the Barons’ first 12 games have seen the other side score first. In those games, Ocean City has posted a 1-2-4 record, before earning their second comeback win of the season on Sunday.

With the loss, the Flames drop to fifth place in the Northeast Division, however, they are only six points out of first place with six games yet to play. Westchester has more games remaining than any team in the division.

After losing their first two all-time meetings against the Hampton Roads Piranhas last year, the Barons will try to get their first victory against the club next Sunday night at home. Last year, the Piranhas joined the 2004 Barons as one of only eight teams in PDL history to finish the regular season unbeaten. However, they were eliminated, at Carey Stadium, in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Brooklyn Knights in a wild penalty kick shootout. This year, the team has struggled, and are 3-6-2 after this weekend’s action. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. next Sunday.
