Nor'easters look to regain first place with road win against New York Red Bulls U23s

Ocean City are unbeaten (2-0-1) against last year's PDL finalist in three all-time meetings

After suffering a 2-0 loss against Reading United last weekend, the Nor'easters high-powered offense will look to get back on track.

After a tough loss in the 2016 Premier Development League home opener, the Ocean City Nor’easters are looking to bounce back as they travel north to Hanover, NJ to take on the New York Red Bulls Under-23 team. The game will be played on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the New York Red Bulls Training Facility.

With a win, the Nor'easters will leap frog the Baltimore Bohemians and Reading United AC -- who play each other on Friday -- into first place in the Mid Atlantic Division.

The Nor’easters and New York Red Bulls U23’s have met three times in the past with the Nor’easters emerging undefeated in those three meetings (2-0-1). The first ever meeting between the clubs took place in the 2013 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup while the Red Bulls were a member of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). Several Ocean City players in that game went on to play professionally. It was a big day for goalkeeper, Keasel Broome, who currently plays for the Harrisburg City Islanders in the USL. Not only did Broome make two saves to get a clean sheet, but he also had a rare assist on a goal scored by Duke LaCroix (Indy Eleven, NASL). Nick Perea (Jacksonville Armada, NASL) had the second goal in the 2-0 win.

The Red Bulls had won the NPSL championship in 2014, but then left the league to join the PDL. The teams met again as division foes and the Nor'easters won the first meeting of the year on the road, 3-1 with goals from John Manga, Matthew Vasquenza and Harry Swartz. When the teams played in Ocean City later in the year, it ended in a scoreless draw. The Red Bulls moved on to the NPSL championship game last year, falling to K-W United.

The Nor’easters are currently in third place in the Mid Atlantic Division after five games played (3-2-0), with four of those games played on the road. The team was in a position to remain in first place with a win this past weekend, but suffered a 2-0 loss against their undefeated rivals, Reading United AC.

After being shut out for the first time this year, talented forward trio Miguel Jaime, Chevaughn “Chevy” Walsh, and Nathan Regis will look to get the offense rolling again. Regis, a former All-PDL selection, is still looking for his first goal of the season after scoring a goal in each of the two preseason friendlies. Jaime and Walsh have scored four goals each so far this season which ties them for third in the PDL.

The Red Bulls U23s started off the season on the right foot with a 2-1 win in their home opener against the Jersey Express, but have endured a three-match winless streak since. After four games played (1-1-2), they sit in fifth place. They lost at home to the Baltimore Bohemians, and followed that up with a draw with Reading United and another draw against winless Lehigh Valley United.

The Red Bulls have scored just six goals in their opening four matches, with Sevag Kherlopian and Arun Basuljevic leading the team with two goals each.

After the match on Wednesday night, the Nor’easters will be eager to get back to the training ground to prepare for another friendly on Saturday, June 11 when they welcome the New England Revolution Under-23s. This match will be a good chance for several squad members to get playing time against tough opposition. The match will kickoff at 7 p.m. at Carey Stadium.
