Nor'easters women victorious in inaugural game against Jersey United Spartans

Veronica Garcia has two goals and one assist to lead Ocean City to 5-0 win in EDP debut

The Ocean City Nor'easters women kicked off their inaugural season with a 5-0 win over Jersey United Spartans. The team was sparked by its younger players, with three of the five goals coming from recent high school graduates Despina Lianidis and Veronica Garcia.

The Ocean City Nor'easters women kicked off their inaugural season in the Eastern Development Program with a 5-0 win over Jersey United Spartans. The team was sparked by its younger players, with three of the five goals coming from recent high school graduates Despina Lianidis and Veronica Garcia.

Leading the way for the Nor'easters was Lianidis who had two goals and one assist. Lianidis broke open a scoreless game in the 24th minute. Garcia made it 2-0 with her 25th minute goal that was set up by Lianidis.

Just before the halftime break, Lianidis made it 3-0 to give the Nor'easters more breathing room.

The second half picked right where first left off, with a goal. Max New made it 4-0 to the Nor'easters with an unassisted goal from a corner kick. Her long ball was perfectly placed into the far upper 90. In the 80th minute, Alex Fama sent a through ball pass to a sprinting Laina Matus who buried the ball into the back of the net to make it 5-0.

Leading the Nor'easters to the shut out was Nor'easters backline of Shea Scannell, Jordyn Martini, Maddie Williscroft and Courtney Davis and goalkeeper Courtney Simpson who were all sharp throughout the 90 minute game.

"I am very proud of the performance by everyone today," said the Nor'easters' English international Tara O'Brien. "We worked hard for each other and took our chances. I'm honored to be named captain of this amazing team and I hope I can help lead thus team to a successful season."
